North Africa and the Middle East is home to some of the most important cultural, historical and religious sites in the world. Below are some unmissable destinations that should be visited when planning a solo tour in Egypt, Jordan, Morocco or Israel.
1
Pyramids of Giza, Egypt
A singles holiday to Egypt surely involves visiting the Great Pyramids of Giza. One of the seven wonders of the ancient world, they were built for the Pharaohs as royal tombs and in honour of the gods. Giza is also where you can see the Sphinx, part of the tomb complex of King Khafre.
2
Sahara Desert, Northern Africa
The world’s largest hot desert, the Sahara Desert spans across Northern Africa. On our tour in Morocco you have the chance to spend the night here, at a traditional Berber Camp. Sleep under the stars and embrace the traditional Berber way of life, eating local food and listening to traditional music.
3
The River Nile, Egypt
The River Nile has played an integral part in Egypt since the time of the Ancient Egyptians and it is a must for any solo traveller. On our tours you can take an overnight felucca cruise, sailing toward Kom Ombo. This experience will make you feel part of history, as the Pharaohs used to travel the Nile on beautiful boats for their leisure.
4
Petra, Jordan
The iconic archaeological site of Petra cannot be missed on a solo tour in Jordan. The ancient city is built with beautiful red rock and is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. There are many incredible buildings to visit in Petra from the breath-taking Treasury to the Theatre, carved into the mountain-side.
5
Jerusalem, Israel
If you’re visiting Israel then you cannot leave without stopping in Jerusalem. The city itself is an important historical and religious site as well as being close to other religious locations such as Nazareth and Bethlehem. Jerusalem also has fantastic restaurants and entertainment to enjoy and is widely becoming a cultural capital alongside the city of Tel Aviv.
6
The Dead Sea, Israel & Jordan
Solo trips to the Middle East should not miss taking some time to indulge at the Dead Sea Resort located in both Jordan and Israel. The waters here contain salts and minerals so you can float easily, watching the world go by. It is a fantastic place to visit if you need some time to recharge your batteries on a solo vacation.
7
Marrakech, Morocco
If you are planning a solo visit to Morocco, then the enchanting city of Marrakech is likely to be high on your list. Flanked by the Atlas Mountains, the city is a maze of markets and souks which you can easily lose the day in. Visit a leather-tannery, haggle for bargains in the labyrinth of stalls and stop to take a breath with a traditional mint-tea.

Top Tips for Solo Travellers visiting North Africa and the Middle East
1) Bartering in the markets
Visiting the markets and souks is an experience in itself. Set all your sense alive as you browse countless stands offering spices to scarves to leather bags. Most vendors will expect to be haggled with, so don’t be scared! If they start with a price that seems large then name your price. Going to half works well - they will counteroffer and you do the same until you are both happy. If in doubt then shop around at other stands and see what others are selling the item at.
2) Tipping
On our tours in Egypt we include the tips for the transport, accommodation and included activities so you do not have to worry about that on your singles vacation. Optional excursions meals and the Tour Leaders are not included but we do recommend $5-7 a day for the Tour Leaders at your discretion. Tipping for other services is around 10% and expected.
3) Dress Appropiately
Be aware that in the Middle East and North Africa it is disrespectful to dress in inappropriate or skimpy clothing - women especially may get uncomfortable stares if they are showing too much chest or legs. Loose harem trousers are a great packing essential to keep you cool but modest.
4) Bring Suncream
North Africa and the Middle East remains hot pretty much all year round. Our group tours do not actually run in the main summer months as it is far too hot to enjoy your solo adventure. Make sure you pack sun-cream so you do not get burnt when spending your days sightseeing.
4) Safety in North Africa and the Middle East
Whilst we cannot control events we always ensure on our group tours that are passengers are kept safe and looked after. We follow FCO advice and only travel to areas under their guidelines avoiding locations which are deemed a high-risk threat such as terrorism. We always recommend as a solo traveller to exercise an appropriate amount of caution such as keeping hold of your bag in busy markets and not displaying valuables.
