Top 12 places to visit in Israel
Stunning beaches, sweeping landscapes, soaring mountains and one of the most fascinating histories on earth, Israel has much to offer the curious traveller. We're sure you've heard of the religious cities of Jerusalem and Bethlehem, but that is only the beginning. Israel has so much to explore! Here's our pick of the top places to visit in Israel.
1. Jerusalem
For many, visiting Jerusalem is a highlight of their trip to Israel. Exploring one of the oldest and holiest places in the world will have you spellbound, no matter what your religious beliefs are. The heart of Israel is built of Medieval citadels, ancient walls surrounding the Old City and significant religious sites that many people travel the world to see. The city of peace is sacred for three major religions - Islam, Christianity and Judaism.
Walk in Jesus’ footsteps, tour the great Tower of David, visit the place where Jesus is said to be buried. Pray at the Western Wall and visit the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock. One of the best things to do in Jerusalem however is to visit the fantastic museums. Once you see how steeped in history the city is, you’ll want to know more! A great place to start is at the Yad VaShem museum.
Travel Tip
Many places, especially in smaller towns won’t accept bank cards so make sure you keep a handy stash of cash with you at all times.
2. Bethlehem
The birthplace of Jesus is one of the most important stops on a tour to Israel. Around 1.5 hours drive south of Jerusalem, Bethlehem can easily be explored on a day trip. The ancient city contains centuries of history and a bounty of religious sites. Significantly, there is the UNESCO World Heritage site of The Church of the Nativity (one of the oldest churches in the world) and St Jerome’s Cave. End your day by visiting the beautiful Cremisan Valley for a tipple of wine tasting, then follow with incredible sunset views at Herodium Hill.
3. Tel Aviv
Tel Aviv is often recalled as one of the biggest highlights when visiting Israel. The mesmerising architecture of the mosques and synagogues will have you standing still. The authentic Israeli markets (such as Camel Market) will have you browsing and haggling like a local. And a trip to Tel Aviv wouldn’t be complete without lounging on the array of beautiful beaches with their water activities and rich marine parks - Gordon Beach, Frishman Beach and Banana Beach are some of the most popular. Known as the party city, one of the best things to do in Tel Aviv is experience the height of Israeli’s nightlife. Party until the sun comes up, indulge in the city's flood of culinary delights and attend one of the many events. Israel’s entertainment capital will be one to remember.
4. The Dead Sea
The deep blue of the Dead Sea has to be one of the most unique places in the world. Floating at the lowest point on earth, surrounded by breathtaking scenery is an otherworldly experience and one that can only be found here. Other things to do in the Dead Sea area are to visit the Masada and Ein Gedi - a magical oasis in the midst of the desert. Or visit the archaeological site of Bethany which dates back to the Byzantine and Roman period.
5. The Sea of Galilee
The largest freshwater lake in Israel - the Sea of Galilee - is a sacred place where many important religious moments happened, most notably where Jesus walked on water. The lake is a great place to relax, partake in watersports or experience some of the best hiking in Israel. Take a dip in the hot springs or thermal mineral pools, trek through the national park or soak up the sun on the beach. There’s also camping spots if you want to spend the night!
6. Nazareth
Nazareth is one of the most holy, Christian places in Israel, it’s also a spectacular city rich in history, culture and beautiful, crumbling architecture. Known as the cradle of Christianity, Nazareth was said to have been the home of Mary and Joseph. Explore the winding streets of the Old City, browsing the Arabian markets. Visit the Church of the Annunciation, the Holy Caves, St Gabriel’s church and the Ancient Bath House of Nazareth.
