Day 1 - Arrive Mexico City
Once you have checked in, the remainder of the evening is at your leisure.
One of the world’s largest metropolises, Mexico City is also the oldest urban centre in the western hemisphere, when it was called Tenochtitlan. Nowhere is Mexico’s past better depicted than at its central plaza, the Zocalo. Surrounded by some of the finest buildings of the colonial era, are the remnants of one of the Aztecs’ principal monuments, the Templo Mayor. Its mysterious shapes stand as a haunting tribute to the pre-Hispanic civilisation that flourished here long ago.

Day 2 - Mexico City tour and Teotihuacan
The morning is spent soaking up the city. You will explore the “Zocalo”, also known as the Plaza de la Constitucion. This has been the heart of the city since the Aztec’s rule at the time of Montezuma I and was surrounded by palaces and temples. It is now the a good understanding of Mexico’s history and culture in this square alone, from the ruins of the Great Temple of Tenochtitlan to Diego Riviera’s murals of the struggle for independence on the walls of the National Palace
That afternoon you will visit the historical archeological complex of Teotihuacan. You will take in the fascinating Pyramid of the Sun and the Moon and Calle de los Muertos (Street of the Dead) which was once flanked by palaces, temples and platforms. The buildings are decorated with friezes and other ornate artworks. Be prepared for lots of walking and climbing here. If at all possible, we would recommend climbing to the top of the Sun and then at least to the first platform of the Moon for the amazing view down the Calle de los Muertos. Bearing the above in mind, bring some water as the refreshment stalls are quite a distance from the pyramids, a sunhat and camera but little else to carry around.
Today you will also visit the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Approximately five miles north-east of the Zocalo is the Basilica de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, home of the most venerated icon in Mexico. It is said that the image of the Virgin was imprinted on the cloak of Juan Diego, an ordinary Indian who was chosen by the bishop of Tlatelolco to build a church on the hill. The famous cloak now hangs in a new basilica built alongside the old, which is tilting severely as it sinks into the soft soil.

Day 3 - Puebla-Oaxaca
Today you will head to the beautiful, colonial city of Puebla. It is flanked by four of Mexico’s best-known volcanoes — Popocatepetl, Iztaccihuatl, Malinche and Citlaltepetl, also known as Pico de Orizaba. There are many reasons to visit the city, including sampling its fabulous regional cuisine. Some of Puebla’s delectable dishes include their famous mole poblana sauce as well as the seasonal delicious dish of chiles en nogada. The historic centre of Puebla has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Undoubtedly, one of the reasons for this honour is due to the absolutely stunning tile work that decorates the town’s historic colonial buildings. Famous for the handpainted Talavera tile, Puebla was the first city in New Spain to master the art of decorating and glazing firebaked clay, an art introduced by the Spanish, which had Arabic influences. Spanish tile makers took up residence in Puebla and set a standard of excellence that prevails to this day. You will see tiles adorning many churches and other buildings around the town.
Once you have spent the day soaking up the charms of Puebla, you will continue on to your hotel in Oaxaca where the evening is at your leisure.

Day 4 - Monte Alban and Oaxaca City tour
This morning you will meet your private guide and travel to Monte Alban, the religious capital of the Zapotecan people, built upon a hill. This place is rich with pyramids and tombs and set in a beautiful panoramic location. The ruins extend over the peaks of three mountain ranges that converge in Oaxaca’s central valley, at an altitude of 1600 metres above sea level.
Following your tour of Monte Alban, you will continue to Mitla, named by the Spaniards after San Pablo Mitla. Mitla’s quaint, narrow and colourful streets are home textile merchants, as well as to a great number of Mezcal producers and vendors. You will visit the church located here and the neighbouring archaeological site. Today you will also take in Santa Maria del Tule, where the famous Arbol del Tule (tree of tule) is located. This mighty tree, having a circumference of over 160 feet at its base, is between 2000-3000 years old, making it one of the oldest in the world. The remainder of the day is at your leisure in Oaxaca.

Day 5 - Mitla-Tehuantepec
Today you will visit the areas surrounding Oaxaca, starting with Mitla, an old Mixtec centre. Named by the Spaniards after San Pablo Mitla, Mitla’s quaint, narrow and colourful streets are home to textile merchants, as well as to a great number of Mezcal producers and vendors. You will visit the church and neighbouring archaeological site here where you can see ancient Mixtec ruins.
You will then head to Santa Maria del Tule, a town famous for its Arbol del Tule (tree of tule) in the churchyard of Santa Maria de la Asuncion. This mighty Cypress tree,having a circumference of over 160 feet at its base , is between 2000 and 3000 years old, making it one of the oldest living things on earth. Later that day you will transfer to Tehuantepec where the afternoon and evening are at your leisure.

Day 6 - Sumidero Canyon-San Cristobal de las Casas
Today you will depart for the State of Chiapas in the direction of its capital, Chiapa de Corzo. From here you will visit the impressive Sumidero Canyon, travelling by local boat. The canyon is surrounded by a national park and has vertical walls which are up to 1000 metres high. You will reach the warmer and more junglelike region of the Grijalva Valley where you will pass beneath towering waterfalls and you may even glimpse crocodiles sunning themselves on the riverbanks. After your adventure through the canyon, you will continue your journey up into the mountains to San Cristobal de las Casas which is located at 2,000 metres above sea level.

Day 7 - San Cristobal de las Casas
San Cristobal de las Casas is surrounded by 21 indigenous villages with distinct languages, dress and customs. Red tiled houses painted in brilliant colours dominate the city, maintaining a delightful provincial charm. Today you will visit the indigenous communities of San Juan Chamula and Zinacantan, located few kilometres from San Cristobal.
You will also have a short city tour where you can visit the local market to admire the art craft abilities of the indigenous locals and possibly pick up a gift or two! You will also discover the famous local churches, among which the most important being Santo Domingo. The rest of the day is free in San Cristobal to enjoy this unique place; its markets, colourful architecture, its churches and the many little shops and restaurants.

Day 8 - Depart Mexico City
