Serengeti National Park
The Serengeti is one of the most famous national parks in the world and Tanzania’s leading wildlife sanctuary. Located in the northern part of Tanzania, this vast ecosystem is 30,000km of what the Maasai people call “endless plains”. The Serengeti hosts the largest mammal migration in the world making it one of the best places for an African safari. Miles of woodlands, grasslands, savannahs and rivers paint a perfect picture of the quintessential African landscape.
Best time for a
Serengeti Safari
Temperatures in Tanzania don’t fluctuate much throughout the year, however, rainfall is what you need to be aware of. March-May is the long rainy season, when heavy rainfall causes lodges and camps to close down. The other rainy season is between October and November. The rains aren’t as heavy, but it is something to remember when booking your tour.
The best time to visit the Serengeti is between June and September - when the Great Migration takes place. Another particularly good time is from January to February. To optimise your chances of seeing wildlife, move with the herd. During winter, the herd will be in the southern section of the Serengeti, whereas during the summer and autumn they are in the Western Corridor and the Northern Serengeti.
Serengeti Safaris with Tucan Travel
A Serengeti safari is included on many of our group tours to Tanzania. We swap our Tucan Travel truck for a classic 4WD safari vehicle and head into the depths of the Serengeti.
Serengeti by Seasons
Autumn
March-May
From March-May Tanzania is at the height of a long rainy season. The landscapes are a lush green, but it usually rains every day. In the breaks between heavy downpours you'll see the skies full of birds as they migrate into Tanzania.
Winter
June - August
June is the beginning of Tanzania’s dry season, which lasts until October making it one of the best times to visit the Serengeti. The dry weather means it’s much easier to spot wildlife when the vegetation is sparse. Winter is also the time of the Great Migration, making it the busiest time to visit.
Spring
September - November
Dry season in Tanzania lasts until October making this also one of the best times to visit the Serengeti. As well as the thick vegetation thinning out, wildlife gather at watering holes, meaning you’ll have a strong chance of a successful safari. In November however, the short rainy season begins.
Summer
December - February
The short rainy season lasts through December; however, January to February is an excellent time to visit the Serengeti. It’s calving season in the south, making it great for catching predators in action.
