Cambodia is a great destination year round. There are many factors that can affect your decision on when to book such as heat, rainfall and number of tourists. Cambodia is warm year round and divided into wet and dry season. Most people visit during the dry season, November to March, therefore this is also the busiest period. Dry season brings higher temperatures and less rain, meaning flooding and landslides are rare. Wet season, May to October, brings heavy rainfall however this is usually only briefly at some point in the day and does not usually halt travel plans. Wet season still brings many hours of sunshine and rain in Cambodia is tropical, therefore can be a refreshing experience!
So, when should I go to
Cambodia
Overall Cambodia is a great experience year round. If you enjoy the heat and want a drier experience, then travel between November and April. If you don’t mind a bit of a downpour and would enjoy cheaper prices as well as less tourists around the country then book between May and October. April and May tend to be hottest months, with high humidity and temperatures often reaching 38 degrees celsius.
Festivals and Public Holidays
There are various festivals held in Cambodia throughout the year, with most of them stemming from Buddhist rituals and beliefs.
Water Festival
Water Festival is a three day event that marks the end of the wet season and the start of harvest. Held in November each year, people across Cambodia celebrate however the biggest celebrations are found in Phnom Penh and include fireworks and boat races!
Khmer New Year
Khmer New Year is probably the most important and celebrated holiday in the country. The New Year sees families come together to eat delicious food, perform rituals and take part in gestures of goodwill.
Pchum Ben
Pchum Ben is the most culturally significant event in the country, taking place in September of each year. People come together to bless the souls of ancestors and relatives and friends who have passed away, with Buddhist temples being the focal point of the festival. It is also known as “Ancestors Day”.
King Sihanouk's Birthday
King Sihanouk's Birthday is another event celebrated by the whole of Cambodia! On the 31st October each year, people flock to the capital city to join in with the celebrations. Often the King’s birthday and Water Festival coincide resulting in days of celebrations along the riverfront in Phnom Penh.
