Best time to
visit Argentina
The best time to visit Argentina depends on where you want to go and what you want to do. Are you looking to hike through the icy Patagonia region? Or do you prefer to spend your days lounging on a secluded beach?
On the whole, autumn is the best time to visit Argentina. The crowds are much smaller than during high season and the prices much lower. Spring is also a fantastic time to travel as the cities come alive after the chilling winter. Events start popping up, wildlife migrates, flowers bloom, and the weather warms up almost all over the country.
Did you know?
The hottest and coldest record temperatures in South America both occurred in Argentina.
The weather
in Argentina
Having such a diverse landscape, the weather in Argentina varies drastically from place to place. The Iguazu Falls generally stays at a consistent, tropical temperature with high humidity making it an excellent all-year destination. The further west you go, the drier the climate as you head towards the Atacama desert. The evenings at Atacama get very cold during winter but unbearably warm in the summer. Buenos Aires is often said to be at its best during October-November before the summer crowds fly in.
Aside from visiting the ski resorts in Bariloche, winter is generally not a great time to visit Argentina as the majority of the country close down due to bad weather and small crowds.
Best time for
hiking in Patagonia
There’s nothing quite like exploring Patagonia. Sparkling lakes, misty mountains and shattering glaciers, it’s an incredible experience for getting off the beaten track. On the whole, autumn and summer are the best times to visit Patagonia. The weather remains at a pleasant 15-20℃ and receives the least rain in the year, making it the perfect climate for hiking the stunning landscape.
Four Seasons in Argentina
Spring
September - November
Spring is often regarded as one of the best times to visit Argentina, as the weather is warm and dry almost all over the country. Spring is excellent for visiting Salta, exploring its stunning Colonial architecture amidst the glorious rolling, green valley landscape. Spring is also a great time to visit Buenos Aires. The weather is mild, the crowds small and the humidity low. Perfect!
Summer
December - February
Summer is the best time to visit the Andean mountains, especially if you’re taking on the challenge of Aconcagua. It’s also a great time to visit Tierra del Fuego. Summer is not the ideal time to visit the major cities in Argentina. Buenos Aires can get particularly humid and uncomfortable. The summer heat can also get unbearable in the lowland parts of the north.
Autumn
April - June
If you’re planning a trip to Argentina in autumn, Mendoza is at its best with wine harvest events popping up all over the country and the temperature staying around a glorious 25℃. There’s no better time to sip Argentina’s famous Malbec. Autumn is also a great time to visit Patagonia or the beach groves in Tierra del Fuego.
Winter
June - August
Winter is an excellent time for skiing in the Andes, however the weather in Patagonia and southern Argentina is generally too treacherous for hiking, so many attractions close. Winter in the north of Argentina however, can still have pleasant weather. It’s also an excellent time for hiking through the jungles or exploring the salt flats.
